MY FAVOURITE MUSIC

Here in ruins, love remains
We will rise again

Since music is such a big part of my life, I wanted to make a page all about my favorite music! There are some bands and genres I'm still exploring and my music taste is also constanly evolving, so I reckon I'll never be truly done with this one :3c

I intentionally don't put Spotify or similar streaming links next to the songs because I despise every streaming platform with a passion. I put Bandcamp links (if available) because you can support the artists directly (and you get to keep the audio files) and YouTube links because YouTube is accessible to most people. If you want to use a streaming platform that's fine, but you'll have to search for the artists/songs yourself.

Lord of the Lost

This is a criminally underrated metal band from Hamburg, Germany. My best friend (who was also my guide when I first got into metal) introduced me to their music in the beginning of 2022 and at time of writing I can say with full confidence that they have become my favourite band.

The reason? Their music feels like home to me. The lyrics often mix melancholy, optimism and rage - the three emotions I am torn in between at any waking moment. At the same time, they tell stories which feed my imagination. I often construct entire fantasy worlds based off of the stories told by LOTL's songs. The music itself, the melody, the rhythm is just right: It's loud and heavy enough to calm my brain and comfort me without being overwhelming or confusing. Chris Harms' voice is like a warm blanket for my freezing soul. They are queer and colourful. They are dark and badass. They openly support trans people in a time where we're made out to be the enemy. Yes, I feel at home when I listen to this band.

If I ever start making music myself, LOTL will be the reason why.

My top 5 songs

  1. Six Feet Underground
Album: From the Flame into the Fire
This will sound weird, but this is a very romantic song, in a fucked up way. That's what I like most about it. This is also one of the songs where I have extended the story in my head. I think the speaker is a vampire who had to experience their lover dying while they themselves are immortal. They are also gay in my head of course, everyone knows all vampires are queer.
  2. Ruins
    Album: Thornstar
This song resonates with me on an emotional level. Despite all the pain I have been and am still going through, despite feeling like I am ruined, unlovable, a disappointment because of it, I can still heal and build myself up again. Love did indeed remain in the ruins.
  3. In Our Hands *
    Album: Thornstar
This is such a beautiful, hopeful song. It's a bit like Ruins, except that song makes me think about the past and its effect on the present and this one makes me look to the future.
  4. Raining Stars
    Album: Empyrean
Facing imminent and unavoidable death and using what little time you have left to love and marvel at the beauty of the apocalypse is something I can very much relate to. Even with the fear and anger I feel about climate change I can't help but be awestruck at the force of nature. I don't want to encourage doomerism here, I don't think all is lost yet. We can and should work towards a better future and slowly, changes are happening. However, as long as we live under capitalism, and probably for a while afterward, many people are going to die and many people are going to experience or already have experienced a sort of apocalypse.
  5. Lily of the Vale
    Album: Thornstar (Deluxe Version)
This song speaks to the sea of raw, barely controlled rage I feel at basically all times.

*The official audio to this one sadly is not available anymore, this video comes pretty close though

Powerwolf

This band means a lot to me even if I don't listen to their music as often anymore. I got into them pretty early on in 2021 and it ended up being a huge fixation that lasted until December of the same year. I couldn't listen to anything else, my brain just wouldn't accept it. Since I pretty much only listen to music on my own, this wasn't a big problem, but I still think it's peculiar. I've had fixations on musicians and genres before (and since then), but this was by far the longest of them.

If you were to ask me what I like that much about them, I don't think I could give you an exact answer. I think it might just be... the specific combination of what their music is. It's power metal mostly about Christianity, but in an ironic way. Like Christianity but in the horniest way possible. Also werewolves. I think that combination of high energy music with the lyrics being funny to me is why I like them. Besides, high energy/angry metal songs give me an unholy amount of gender euphoria, so that's definitely part of it.

My top 5 songs

  1. Venom of Venus
    Album: The Sacrament Of Sin
  2. Incense & Iron
    Album: The Sacrament Of Sin
  3. Army Of The Night
    Album: Blessed & Possessed
  4. Higher Than Heaven
    Album: Blessed & Possessed
  5. Resurrection By Erection (2020 version)
    Album: Best Of The Blessed

Faun

Faun's music is quite magical. The vast majority of their songs are in German, in a medieval style. It makes me feel like a character in a high fantasy novel. I've been on the lookout, but haven't found anything like Faun anywhere. Most bands in these genres mix medieval music with other genres, which is fine, just not what I'm looking for. I like how Faun uses historical instruments and how the way they use modern effects is very subtle.

The contents of their songs are also great. The ones I like the most typically tell some sort of fairy tale or story. It just adds to that fantasy vibe I mentioned.

My top 5 songs

  1. Rabenballade (Raven Ballad)
    Album: Midgard
This song is about a soldier who died during a war in a bog. I like it because of the anti-war message. While the singer talks about a noble who started a war in their own interest, it could easily be swapped out for politician or dictator and the message would stay the same. War hurts more people than it helps.
  2. Alba II*
    Album: Midgard
This song isn't directly about a fairy tale, but it expresses something that hits close to home. It uses the transition from winter to spring and from night to day as a metaphor for leaving a dark time behind. I feel that heavily.
  3. Blaue Stunde (Blue Hour)
    Album: Luna
This one is about a man seeing a beautiful woman during the blue hour and not being able to forget her despite her never showing up again. I honestly just think it slaps.
  4. Sonnenreigen (Lughnasad) (Round Dance Of The Sun (Lughnasad))
    Album: Midgard
As the name suggests, this song is about the Gaelic festival celebrating the first harvest, Lughnasadh. More specifically, the singer is singing about the celebration and a love interest she has met during it. I really like the parts about the celebration and the song makes me want to dance.
  5. Federkleid (Plumage)
    Album: Midgard
This is the song that got me into Faun in the first place. It's about the singer turning into a bird in the bog fog and feeling free. I think it's a really good example for the effect Faun has on me. It feels like my soul is dancing along to this song (just as the others on this list). That's why I started listening to this band and I haven't regretted it.
*"Alba" could stand for a number of things: It's a first name and a last name, it's the name or part of the name of multiple places, including being the Scottish Gaelic name for Scotland. I don't really know what Alba stands for here. The name means dawn or sunrise in Spanish and Italian which matches the song's lyrics so that's my best guess.
